On contract N00421-02-D-3181, as prime contractor in support of the P-3C program, Wyle investigated approaches for improving the capability of the P-3C to attack underwater targets in a littoral environment.  Wyle’s initial research of possible technologies that could be used, followed by requirements and cost versus benefits analyses, determined that a cost effective approach would be to utilize the existing “directed search” capabilities of the MK-46 and 54 torpedoes.  This was followed by an extensive research effort to identify/define the existing weapons control interfaces, system timing parameters, and signal characteristics; and development of a system architecture.  The system included a Directed Search Interface Control Unit (DSICU) and a Directed Search Mode Selector Panel (DSMSP) that would provide a “directed search” mode of operation in addition to the existing “circle search” mode.  Wyle also designed and developed prototype versions of the DISCU and DSMSP and completed initial integration testing during weapon system mock-up bench tests using actual aircraft components.
